Oakham RFC kicked off their 2025/26 campaign in style with a 24–12 victory over Market Harborough 2nd XV at The Showground.
Played in bright but blustery conditions, Oakham started strongly, winning the physical battle up front and putting Harborough under early pressure. That dominance was rewarded after a 5m scrum, when Angus Boyle powered over from close range for the opening try (5–0).
Building momentum, Oakham’s carrying game continued to punch holes in the defence and it was debutant Pex Koroiveibau who crashed over for the second try, converted by Lewis Crellin to extend the lead to 12–0. Harborough hit back before half-time, capitalising on penalties to work their way into scoring position, and crossed for an unconverted try to close the gap to 12–5 at the break.
The second half began with a bang as Thomas Cann showed his pace, streaking clear for Oakham’s third try. With the conversion missed, Oakham led 17–5. Despite being reduced to 13 players through injury, Harborough dug in, their forwards winning key scrum penalties to gain territory and set up a try with seven minutes to play (17–12).
Oakham weren’t finished, though. Chasing a fourth try for the bonus point, they won a penalty on halfway with the clock in the red. Crellin’s kick to touch set up a 5m lineout, and from there the backs moved the ball wide for Ratu Koroibulileka to dive over in the corner. Crellin landed the touchline conversion with the final kick of the game to seal a 24–12 win.
It was a performance that reflected the new energy around the club — with a new coach, new players making their mark, and a busy clubhouse creating a fantastic atmosphere in support of the team.
