A strong crowd gathered at The Showground on Saturday to cheer on the Oakham 1st XV, as they welcomed Syston RFC for a league encounter that promised plenty of action — and it didn’t disappoint.

The home supporters were treated to an open, attacking game played at high tempo, with both sides looking to play expansive rugby despite the gusty conditions. Oakham began brightly, matching Syston’s physicality and structure in the opening stages. Some excellent first-phase play and committed defence kept the visitors honest, with both packs battling hard for control.

However, as the half wore on, a series of unforced errors gave Syston the chance to build momentum. The visitors took full advantage, crossing for several scores despite determined Oakham defence. Still, there were plenty of positives for the home side — especially in the way the team worked together and looked to execute set-piece patterns under pressure.

The halftime score stood at 12–27, reflecting a contest that felt far closer than the numbers suggested. Oakham regrouped well after the break, continuing to play with ambition and determination. There were moments of real quality, including strong carries from the forwards and slick handling out wide, leading to some well-earned tries that kept the crowd engaged throughout.

Ultimately, consistency proved the difference. Syston’s experience and accuracy helped them extend their lead late on, but Oakham never stopped working. Their commitment, effort, and team spirit shone through, and the second half performance showed just how much potential this group has.

“We have to be patient,” said the coaching team after the match. “The hard work the lads are putting in during training will soon come to fruition. Some of it showed on Saturday with great first-phase play — now we need to keep building and sustain that level throughout the game.”
