A bumper festive crowd gathered at the Showground on Saturday, fresh from a fantastic Christmas Jumper Lunch, to watch our 1st XV take on league leaders Sileby Vikings Rfc in our final home game before Christmas.
Sileby showed their quality early, taking control of the first half and heading into the break with a 0–22 lead. Earlier in the season, a game in this position may have been lost by a large score, but what followed was a testament to the growth, belief and confidence building within this squad.
Oakham came out for the second half with real purpose. A renewed intensity in defence, far better accuracy in attack, and a collective belief saw the momentum shift dramatically. The lads battled their way back into the contest with tries from:
Terry McCourt
Will Begy
Josh McGarry
Lewis Crellin added three well-struck conversions to bring the score line to 21–27, setting up a thrilling finish that had the Showground in full voice.
A game that once looked out of reach became a genuine contest, with Oakham pushing the league leaders all the way to the final whistle. The character, resilience and self-belief shown in that second half is a huge positive to take forward.
Although the result didn’t quite fall our way, the performance — especially after the break — showed exactly what this team is capable of when they trust in themselves and play with confidence.
Thank You
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success:
