Match Report
Oakham RFC 5–17 Aylestone St James RFC
Half-Time: 5–5 | Saturday 24 October 2026
Oakham RFC's unbeaten start to the season came to an end at the Rutland Showground on Saturday, as Aylestone St James emerged 17–5 winners in challenging weather conditions.
Having won their opening four matches, the Oaks went into the fixture full of confidence, but strong winds and persistent rain made life difficult for a side that has enjoyed playing expansive, attacking rugby in the early weeks of the campaign.
With several key players unavailable, Oakham faced a sizeable and physical Aylestone St James outfit who adapted more effectively to the conditions, making better use of their opportunities in a tightly contested first half.
The visitors struck first to take an early lead, but Oakham responded through captain James Easson, whose try brought the scores level at 5–5 going into the interval.
With everything still to play for, Oakham faced the difficult task of playing into the wind and rain during the second half.
Despite working their way into several promising attacking positions, the Oaks were unable to turn their opportunities into points. Aylestone, meanwhile, continued to manage the difficult conditions effectively, using their physicality and experience to put Oakham under pressure.
The visitors eventually broke the deadlock with a second try before adding a third in the closing moments, the final score being converted to seal a 17–5 victory.
Congratulations to Aylestone St James, who thoroughly deserved their win on a difficult afternoon for both sides.
For Oakham, the result is undoubtedly disappointing, particularly after such an encouraging start to the campaign, but it is by no means a disaster.
Four victories from the opening five fixtures still represent a strong start to the season, and there is plenty for the squad to build upon. Saturday's match provided a reminder that not every game will suit Oakham's preferred style of rugby, and adapting to different opponents and conditions will be an important part of the team's development.
The response now becomes the focus.
Head Coach Jamie Ray and his squad will return to training this week determined to learn from Saturday's defeat, sharpen their game and prepare for another significant challenge.
Next Saturday, 31 October, Oakham travel to Birstall for a top-of-the-table clash, offering an immediate opportunity to return to winning ways and demonstrate the character that has underpinned their impressive start to the season.
One defeat does not define a campaign. How the Oaks respond will be the real test.
