Founded in 1923 by Oakham School masters, Oakham RFC has grown from humble beginnings into a thriving community club with over 100 years of rugby history behind it. From the introduction of mini rugby in 1979, to memorable cup runs and derby victories, to the growth of girls’ rugby through our Melkham partnership — every era has shaped who we are today. Oakham RFC has been built on generations of players, families, and supporters.
On 19 January 1923, King George V was on the throne. Britain was rebuilding after the Great War and the Spanish Flu pandemic.
Across the country, rugby, and community, were finding their feet again. And in a meeting at Victoria Hall, Oakham Rugby Football Club was born.
Just ten days later, the club colours, black and amber, were chosen, along with a badge that still means something special today. Clubs like Oakham RFC became more than just teams; they were places where people reconnected, shared stories, and found belonging.
Now, 102 years later, a King is again on the throne, and Britain is once more rebuilding after a pandemic.
The boots are lighter, the kit brighter — but the values, colours, and sense of community remain unchanged.
