4. CODE OF CONDUCT

Oakham RFC – Code of Conduct for Senior Players – (updated 2025)

At all times, Oakham RFC expects its senior players to:

  • Uphold the spirit of Rugby Union and actively promote the core values of the game – fair play, respect, integrity, and good sportsmanship.
  • Play within the Laws of the Game and respect the decisions of match officials.
  • Reject all forms of cheating, racism, violence, and substance abuse.
  • Play to win, but not at all costs – win with dignity and lose with grace.
  • Respect match officials, many of whom are volunteers dedicating their time to the game. Treat them with courtesy and appreciation.
  • Acknowledge and celebrate good play, whether from teammates or opponents.
  • Communicate availability promptly and be punctual for training sessions and matches. Respect your teammates, coaches, and managers by being reliable and committed.
  • Maintain high standards of behaviour and appearance, both on and off the pitch. You represent Oakham RFC and serve as a role model for our Youth and Mini sections.
  • Use social media responsibly – be mindful that comments on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram reflect on the Club and can be easily misconstrued.
  • Play with discipline and emotional control – do not lose your temper. Acts of physical abuse or violence will be taken extremely seriously by Oakham RFC’s Disciplinary Committee and may result in civil or criminal consequences.
  • Oakham RFC does not condone violence under any circumstances.

Oakham RFC – Code of Conduct for Mini & Junior Players

Oakham RFC is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of all its members. We believe that everyone involved in the club – players, coaches, volunteers, and parents – should always show respect and understanding for the safety and welfare of others.

We encourage openness and communication. If you have any concerns or complaints, please speak with your age group manager/coach or the Youth/Mini Chairperson.

  • As a junior member of Oakham RFC, you are expected to:
  • Play within the rules and respect match officials and their decisions.
  • Respect the rights, dignity, and worth of all participants, regardless of gender, ability, cultural background, or religion.
  • Arrive on time for training and matches or inform your coach/team manager if you’re running late.
  • Wear appropriate kit for training and matches, including compulsory gum shields and IRB-approved studs. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
  • Pay your club subscription after three weeks of training attendance.
  • Refrain from smoking on club premises or while representing Oakham RFC.
  • Never consume alcohol or drugs on club premises or while representing the club.

Oakham RFC – Code of Conduct for Parents/Carers

Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting young players. Oakham RFC asks that you:

  • Encourage your child to learn and follow the rules of the game.
  • Discourage unfair play and arguing with officials.
  • Help your child to recognise effort and improvement, not just results.
  • Never force your child to participate in sport.
  • Set a positive example by applauding fair play and good performances from all players.
  • Never punish or belittle a child for losing or making mistakes.
  • Publicly accept officials’ decisions.
  • Support your child’s involvement and help them enjoy their rugby experience.
  • Always use appropriate language.
  • Encourage your child to take responsibility for their own behaviour and performance.

Oakham RFC – Code of Conduct for Coaches, Club Officials & Volunteers

Oakham RFC expects all coaches, officials, and volunteers to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct and practice:

  • Prioritise the wellbeing and safety of players above performance.
  • Build relationships based on mutual trust and respect.
  • Ensure all activities are age-appropriate and inclusive.
  • Promote the positive values of rugby, including fair play and respect.
  • Respect and value match officials, many of whom are volunteers.
  • Maintain high standards of behaviour and appearance.
  • Follow all guidelines from the RFU and Oakham RFC.
  • Hold valid qualifications and insurance where required.
  • Never use your position for personal gain or influence.
  • Never condone rule violations, rough play, or underage alcohol/drug use.
  • Encourage players to value their effort and development, not just results.
  • Guide players to take ownership of their behaviour and performance.
